The author believes that the most important, and indeed most difficult duty of a writer of fiction is to portray things as they truly are. He uses the analogy of paintings, he believes that the paintings of mystical sibyls and prophets are not nearly as moving as paintings of old women going about their daily business. He also believes that capturing the truth of everyday life is difficult and a venerable thing to strive for.
